Today was a typical Monday, or what amounts to a typical Monday for me these days. Working with a view of the piazza, cooking lunch with a view of the red rooftops of my Tuscan neighbors, and freezing my arse off!
Yes, fall has arrived in Lucca. It arrived with a cold bang in my apartment. These old stone walls hold the cool weather well. Therefore, even after it warms up during the day, it can be 10-15 degrees colder in my apartment than it is outside.
Since the washing machine has been broken for over a week now, I was afraid to put too much on the manager of my apartment. She seems stressed enough over dealing with the washing machine repair guy, so I did not want to add to her troubles by asking for a space heater. I assumed the city does not turn on the heat in these old buildings until later, like in New York City.
So, I, like an idiot, wrapped myself up in all the warm clothes I could find, including my winter hat, and locked myself in the tiny kitchen. After running the hairdryer for a few minutes to warm the small space, I continued working until the room needed a “reheat”.
Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. I had actually turned on the gas stove for a moment and then realized if I ran that for long amounts of time in an enclosed space, I might asphyxiate myself. So I texted the manager, inquiring if there might be a space heater tucked away somewhere in the apartment. She said there was not but if I wanted to turn the thermostat up the heat would come on.
Literally, just outside my tiny kitchen, was the thermostat. Is it possible that I am too short to notice things that should be fairly obvious, even if a little higher on the wall for me than the average adult?
Within moments, the radiators were warm and the apartment was thawing out.
I have no one to blame but myself.
Ciao for now!
